Art Direction – Print & Layout
I designed and art directed the book “These Trees”, which encompassed
176 pages and featured the original photography of Ruth Rosauer. Ruth curated a
collection of verse and poetry from twenty authors and together we paired those
with the photos across six chapters that visually depict the many aspects of trees.
“These Trees” was produced in a formal style with colophon, preface, table of contents,
a dedication and acknowledgements. A section details each of the featured authors
and each photograph used in the book is visually indexed with species and location.
Ruth provided dozens of outtakes and relied on my judgement to select, crop
and position the best of them. Ruth had definite ideas, but in many cases I surprised her
with my combinations and layouts.
The book generated much local interest and I contributed further by designing ads and
promo cards for Ruth’s personal appearances and book signing events.

For several years I was the lead Art Director on the Mission Foods account.
I worked with many photographers and stylists who were dedicated to making the food look great.
This photography was essential to retail efforts and consumer promotions as well as
print and broadcast advertising.
Conceptual drawings for Mission Foods. Free-standing interactive expo kiosks.
Dedicated to helping consumers prepare family meals at home, this Mission Foods promotion was designed with coupon savings and meal ideas. The concept is reinforced with in-store visual merchandising in key departments.
Two POP displays that featured elaborately die-cut pop-up toppers. The base unit is
semi-permanent with changeable side panels and recipe card holders. The Sizzling Summer unit received
a POPAI award for outstanding design in its category.
The Tower of Terror display topper featured sweepstakes messaging and a
lenticular panel with a lightning bolt effect. Pictured are my pencil comp and the illustrator’s first draft.
Long-running print ads and a brochure designed to give consumers delightful ways
to enjoy the product.
My work for Krause included Fine Jewelry lines for which I designed and art directed customized marketing pieces and catalog spreads such as this brochure and invitation for EFFY and Helzberg Diamonds.
My time with Krause gave me the opportunity to art direct this Fine Jewelry catalog. It was thrilling to work with these magnificent items and my design for the cover and spreads was chosen above many others.
The production of this book spared no expense and the first draft was entirely hand drawn.
It was a real learning experience for me.
